Rokka

What are the Higo Rokka?  (6 flowers of Higo)
The common characteristics of the Higo Rokka are that they are "neat single-petaled flowers with elegant stamens and pure colors." Under the strict discipline and samurai pride of the preservation groups of each of the Higo Rokka, known as "Hanaren," the seedlings and seeds have been strictly protected as treasures that are "not to be shared with outsiders." Each has its own unique way of cultivating and appreciating the Higo Rokka. The "Higo Rokka" is the crystallization of the beauty and training that our ancestors have protected and passed down. You can feel the thoughts of people from the past from the flowers that bloom beautifully in each season.

What is the history of the Higo Rokka? (How long have they been grown?!)

The history of Higo Rokka is long, dating back to the Edo period, about 250 years ago. It is said to have begun when the lord of the Kumamoto domain, the sixth feudal lord Hosokawa Shigetaka, encouraged his vassals (samurai) to take up gardening as a way to improve their spiritual development. At that time, there were apparently around 30 species known as Higo flowers. Then, in 1960, when Emperor Showa visited the flowers, the Higo Famous Flowers Society was founded, and six flowers that could be seen throughout the four seasons were selected, and they came to be called "Higo Rokka".

[ Kumamoto's premium fresh confectionery - Higo Rokka ]

Higo Rokka is a flower unique to Kumamoto that has been improved through breeding since the Edo period.

Cultivation began as a samurai spiritual development during the time of Lord Hosokawa Shigetaka, the lord of Kumamoto, and it is still kept secret to this day.

The six flowers have three common features: a magnificent flower center, a single, single-petal flower shape, and a pure color. With the desire to preserve the secret flowers that our predecessors have protected, a Japanese confectioner with a first-class Japanese confectionery craftsmanship qualification has captured the characteristics of each flower and expressed them in detail with Nerikiri, creating the finest fresh confectionery.

Nerikiri is a traditional Japanese confectionery technique in which white bean paste is mixed with gyuhi and kneaded to create a craft.

Please enjoy this masterpiece that is unique to Kumamoto.
